Jim Tolson MSP for Dunfermline West
eNews March 2010

Apologies for the late eNews but I have been a bit busy lately. Normal monthly service will be resumed after the General Election.

Placement Students
It was my pleasure to recently welcome two more Dunfermline Modern Studies students to the parliament for one week each.  These placements have allowed the students to gain an invaluable insight into an MSP’s job by helping with research, attend a committee, a parliamentary debate and First Minister’s Questions.

This has rewarded the students for the hard work they have done in their schools and it is hoped the placement will help them with their Higher Modern Studies syllabus.

NHS Fife Elections
Elections to the Board of NHS Fife will take by postal ballot and close on 10 June 2010. This is one of two Scottish pilots that will see over half the Health Board members elected for the first time. This election will also give the vote to 16 and 17 year olds for the first time in Scotland – an issue I have long campaigned for in all elections!

Duke of Edinburgh Awards
It has been my pleasure to present, for the third time, the D of E awards to Woodmill High School students. This has included for the first time, students winning the D of E Gold award! The hard work put in by the students, the teachers and the parents has shown that the highest standards can be achieved and I congratulate all who completed their D of E awards this year. The three gold award students will receive their certificates in June at a presentation in Holyrood Palace.

Digital Switchover
It has recently been confirmed that the digital television switchover will take place in West Fife in June 2011. This is an issue I have been working on in the Scottish Parliament to ensure residents get good information in plenty of time for the switchover and don’t get pressured to buy equipment they don’t need or want as part of the switchover.

Principally, you do not usually need to change your television or aerial to receive a digital TV signal. However, residents with older video recorders may have some issues after switchover. If you do not already have satellite or cable TV, you will require to purchase a Set-top-Box to view up to 40 channels but the Set-top-Box can cost as little as £10. A help scheme is also included to help those most in need e.g. to the over 75s, full details are available on the link below.
